How Pilates and Stretching Can Help Your Back Pain

People of all ages can have back pain.  It can develop from a lifetime of poor posture or from an accident or injury to your back.  Stretching the soft tissues in your back or the muscles ligaments and tendons will help relieve your back pain if you do these types of exercises and stretches with care and try to avoid pushing yourself too far.

Using Pilates is a great way to implement stretching exercises for your back into your daily exercise routine.  Pilates has been around quite some time actually since World War I when inventor Joseph Pilates used the method on soldiers with disabilities to help improve movement to their core muscles with slow and controlled movements.

Using Pilates and stretching can help and here are a few tips to keep in mind when performing Pilates and stretching exercises:

• Wear comfortable clothes and Pilates can be performed in stocking or bare feet on a firm mat.
• Every stretch you perform should be pain free do not force or overdo.
• Stretch slowly and avoid bouncing to prevent muscle tears.
• Try and hold your stretches twenty to thirty seconds so your muscles and joints become flexible.
• When stretching alternate sides—stretch right and then left.
• Stretches and Pilates movements can be repeated five to ten times as long as they are comfortable.

Other good things to know about Pilates and stretching exercises is that if you take just five to ten minutes each morning or at night and stick with a good routine you will realize significant back pain relief in less time than you think.  Some people who have stiffness or pain in their backs also experience pain or stiffness in their necks and by using the core body movements associated with Pilates you can relieve neck stress and actually make your muscles so flexible that you can prevent future injury.

You can achieve great relief from your back tensions by using stretching and Pilates to increase mobility while decreasing back pain and pain associated with injury or poor posture.  A good Pilates movement can be performed while lying on the mat on your back and pulling both knees to the chest while flexing the head forward until you are in a balled-up position that is comfortable and without pain.  Repeating this a few times will help improve your muscle tone and strengthen your ligaments and joints in your back.  A knee to chest stretch is performed also while lying on your back with your knees bent on the floor and keeping both heels on the floor.  Next place each hand behind one knee and bring forward to the chest.  Alternate the right and left knee and don’t push to the point of pain.  You should just feel a nice firmness in your back and spine.

People of all ages can benefit from stretching and performing Pilates in their weekly exercise routine and finding out more about Pilates is as easy as doing some research online and searching for good Pilates tips and back stretching tips.  Make the decision to start your Pilates experience today.

Pilates and Stretching for Maximum Back Pain Relief

Did you ever think that if your back was strong well conditioned and flexible that it could bear the stress of everyday life?  Well it can and by using Pilates and stretching exercises you can free your back of pain by giving the muscles joints and ligaments in your back a good workout to keep them healthy and aligned.

Using Pilates two to three times a week as part of your exercise routine can also help to prevent further injuries to your back and keep your blood flow moving properly as well as those needed nutrients moving and flowing to all the areas of your body.  Pilates is a controlled slow-movement exercise that is performed on mats as well as using exercise balls in some of the Pilates movements.  Pilates focuses on your core muscles and your torso which is why it is so great for back pain and it helps to make your mind more aware and in tune with your body at every level.

Using good back stretches can strengthen your spinal column as well as the muscles and tendons around your spine.  Mixed with Pilates you can also reap rewards in your abdomen stomach, buttock and hip muscles.  The goal with stretching exercises incorporated with Pilates is to realign your spine so that it is easier for you to use these muscles once they become flexible.  A healthy muscle is a flexible muscle.

As you perfect your Pilates routine to help alleviate back pain remember to go slowly and try to keep good controlled form.  Helping your back with Pilates can be as simple as a using the Straight Leg Stretch and the Single Leg Stretch and the Wall Roll Down movements.  Using these three movements alone will help you realign your back and reduce stress and tension in your back.

Beyond back relief Pilates and stretching can also help improve your abdominal muscles to achieve those six-pack abs everyone always strives for.  Many people think that Pilates is just a “grandma” type of exercise but it is really one where you must focus on every movement and perform it at the highest level to achieve maximum results.

Pilates is good for any age, but for people over 50 who practice Pilates you can strengthen your back tone shoulders arms and legs and reap the health benefits.  Health benefits you can achieve from Pilates are improved bone density lower your blood pressureand keep your blood flow circulation at maximum levels.  It can also help with people who are overweight by reducing weight and maintaining weight.  The effects to all your bones and joints are truly beneficial at every level and can even allow you to sleep better if you suffer from insomnia.  Finally Pilates and stretching exercises are good as post-surgery exercises and can stop the depression associated with surgery and post-surgery pain.

Because the movements of Pilates are well controlled and performed at a steady pace that doesn’t cause pain everyone can reap the rewards of Pilates from teens to adults to older adults.  There is simply no better way to keep your body and mind aligned to improve every part of your body including your back.
